PLA straws – a worthy and safe alternative for nature
It is possible and necessary to use artificially created materials for the dishes’ manufacturing, though the problem of the world’s ocean plastic pollution is still acute.
PLA material – what is it?
PLA (polylactic acid) or polylactide is still a polymer and a synthesized substance. It is completely decomposed in the natural environment because it consists of lactic acid molecules.
The raw materials for this material’s production are sugarcane and corn, which are regularly renewable. Also, potato and corn starch, soy protein, etc. are used.
On an industrial scale, PLA is produced in the USA, Japan, China, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Russia. The scope of its application is very wide. It is used for the production of:
- products with a short service life (packaging, disposable tableware, bags);
- surgical sutures and pins for medical purposes;
- personal hygiene products;
- source material for 3D printers.
Of course, this material is so popular now because it is safe for the environment. Since it is based on, in fact, plants, it can be considered completely biodegradable and environmentally friendly.
Not only material is important for nature but also the method of its synthesis. In the production of polylactide, CO2 emissions into the atmosphere are negligible compared to the manufacture of “petroleum” polymers. And of course, minerals are preserved because the “building material” for PLA can be grown in any field.
The composition of the material is also absolutely harmless to human health and is suitable for use by children.
PLA straws – as a way out of an environmental disaster
Disposable straws are a constant assistant on any holiday. Also, they are used in many other cases when the usual way of drinking is not suitable. That is why it is not always possible to completely abandon this item of utensils. But there is no desire to harm nature.
Fortunately, PLA is now widely used in the production of cocktail attributes – for cups and straws.
The advantages of such straws:
- the appearance and functional properties are completely familiar to the user, they do not leak, and they are sufficiently durable to break;
- a fairly low price compared with reusable products from wood or metal;
- compostable material allows disposing of them safely after use.
It is worth noting that all items from the PLA are quite short-lived. But the material allows them to be made with a high degree of detail. This is a very significant advantage for products printed on a 3D printer. It is precisely there that often lacks the accuracy and “drawing” of all the necessary elements of a particular prototype precisely because of the physicochemical properties of the “petroleum” polymers.
Polylactide is the future that has already come. Since convenience and comfort are now provided not only to man but also to the environment.
